I’ll be honest with you. A few years ago, dermal fillers were everywhere in this industry, and plenty of clinics were happy to keep injecting them into anyone who asked. I used to sit with clients who’d come in wanting more filler because they’d seen someone on Instagram with sculpted cheekbones and puffy lips, and I’d think to myself, is this actually helping her skin, or am I just chasing a trend?
So I stopped. And I want to explain why, because I think women in their 30s, 40s and 50s deserve to know what’s really going on before they sit in anyone’s treatment chair.
The problem with how fillers are being used
Fillers aren’t evil. In the right hands, for the right reason, they have their place. But the way they’re being used on the high street now is a different story. Too much, too often, in the wrong areas, and without any real long-term thinking.
Here’s what I’ve seen with my own eyes over the years:
- Filler migrating away from where it was injected and settling in places it shouldn’t
- Chronic low-grade swelling that clients didn’t even realise was swelling, because it had been there for years
- That heavy, overfilled look that ages a face rather than freshening it
- Skin that looked stretched, tired and genuinely worse than when we started
The research coming out now is catching up with what a lot of us practitioners have been quietly saying for years. Filler doesn’t always fully dissolve. It can sit in the tissue for far longer than we were told, and it can cause problems you only notice when you finally stop.
So what do I actually recommend now?
I work with a few treatments that do the opposite of what filler does. Instead of adding volume from the outside, they work with your own skin to improve quality, tone and firmness from within. Here’s the honest breakdown.
Focus Dual HIFU
This is one of my favourites for women who want lift without anything injected. It uses focused ultrasound energy to target the deeper layers of your skin, the same layer a surgeon would tighten in a facelift. No needles, no downtime, and the results build gradually over a few months. It looks like you, just a fresher, lifted version of you.
Calecim Exosome Microneedling
If you’ve not heard of exosomes yet, you will soon. They’re tiny signalling molecules that tell your skin cells to behave younger, and when combined with medical microneedling, the results on skin texture, tone and radiance are genuinely impressive. It’s become one of the most requested treatments at the clinic, and for good reason.
Preventative anti-wrinkle treatments
Small, thoughtful doses of anti-wrinkle injections in the right muscles can soften lines before they become permanent. Done properly, nobody should be able to tell you’ve had anything done. You just look well-rested.
What this means for you
If you’ve been thinking about fillers, or you’ve had them before and you’re not sure what to do next, my advice is this. Don’t rush into another syringe. Come in for a proper consultation and let’s look at your skin, your face and your goals together. There’s almost always a better way to get you where you want to be.
You’re not a canvas for whatever trend is passing through TikTok. You’re a real woman with real skin, and the goal should always be healthier skin, not more stuff in your face.
